The Boiling Point of Organic ChemistryTo know the boiling point of organic chemistry, I have taken a close look at the facts surrounding it. I want to be very clear about this, the laws that are found in Organic Chemistry are nothing like the ones that we know from other science books. Organic chemistry boils at a far lower temperature than what you would find in a normal chemistry.The boiling point is simply the point at which the reaction reaches equilibrium. Let's take for example a substance that is reacting with another. The chemical reaction that is taking place needs energy to be released in order to get going. The reaction requires heat to start and as the heat increases, the rate of reaction also increases.Now if we could tell what the chemical equation should look like to get a good idea of the boiling point of the substance that is in question, it is possible. If we took the first term on the second line and added an extra zero, the reaction would stop immediately. That me ans that the chemical equation is what is left after adding the single zero to the equation. This gives us the answer to the question of what the boiling point of the substance is.When I did this I noticed that the chemical formula in the scientific paper was very similar to what is found in many other science books. I noticed that the formula was something like the first term on the second line with the addition of the single zero that the chemical equation that is said to be the result of this process should have. I then noted that the same formula is found in several other scientific papers from this time period. I then realized that this could very well be evidence that this process that took place in organic chemistry could be based on the chemical equation found in other science books, but it could also have been a very old and very incomplete version of the chemical equation.It is not too hard to figure out why organic chemistry would be based on an incomplete formula and why there would be such a discrepancy between the known chemical equation and the chemical formula found in the science paper. When you study organic chemistry, you must be sure that the equilibrium that occurs between the substances that are being studied is a mixture. Any other mixture could change the boiling point for the material being studied, and that could easily be a change in the equation. This is why there was a need to do so much experimentation before we could find the right equilibrium.There is one very good thing about knowing the chemical equation for organic chemistry. If you had a question about a new substance, you could go to the references and find the chemical equation for that substance. While it is easy to be discriminated against at work, it is just as easy to fight back against those responsible. In some cases, you may be entitled to compensation for the illegal activity you were subjected to. What is Discrimination at Work? How do you know if you are being discriminated against at work? First, you need to make sure that you are a protected class in the workplace and that your employer is a covered employer under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As an employee, you may be protected against discrimination based on your race, gender, religion or disability. Discrimination is anything that may create a hostile workplace such as crude jokes made about you, sexual advances being made toward you or any decision made about your employment based on anything other than prior work performance. How to Report Discrimination at Work The first step toward stopping workplace discrimination is to report it to someone whom your trust in the company. This does not have to be your immediate supervisor. It merely needs to be someone you trust to investigate the claim in a fair and unbiased manner. This could mean that you talk to an HR representative, another employee within the company or a supervisor in another department. If there is no one in the company that you can trust, it may be a good idea to contact an attorney and check with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to inquire about legal action. How Work Discrimination Laws Apply to Your Case A work discrimination lawsuit is generally the last resort in such a case. First, you must show that you reported the incident and that nothing was done to remedy the problem. Alternatively, you could show that reporting the incident would have led to nothing being done to resolve the issue. Normally, you will contact the EEOC to ask that they investigate your claim for you. They will generally try to resolve the issue through negotiation and other informal settlement options. If it looks like such negotiations wont result in a resolution, you may be given the approval to file a lawsuit. Depending on where the discrimination took place and whether state or federal laws were broken, your case will be assigned to a state or federal judge. At any point before going to trial, you may settle the case with your employer. As part of a settlement, you may get your job back and get full benefits as if you never were terminated in the first place. Your attorney may help you with negotiations to ensure that you get a favorable resolution to your case. How to Deal With Discrimination at Work Being discriminated at work can be a mentally challenging experience. This is especially true if the person committing the illegal activity is your boss or another supervisor within the company. During the investigation, your boss and others may try to label you as difficult or say that you were to blame for what happened. You should also know that you may be forced to work with or close to the person who was acting in an illegal manner during the investigation. Therefore, you need to simply come to work, do your job and then go home at the end of the day. If you listen to the workplace gossip or try to read too much into what happens after your claim is submitted, you will go crazy. The most important thing though is that you spoke up. That is a victory in itself, and even if you are fired, leaving a company that would mistreat you isnt the end of the world. Being the victim of discrimination is not something that you want to go through. However, if you are a victim, know your rights and take action. Allowing your employer to treat you like something less than a person may embolden those committing the acts to keep on mistreating people. To ensure your footage is in focus, you’ll need to focus manually, which can be tricky, especially for beginners.Try making your static shots dynamics. Don’t always shoot from the same angle as it’ll make everything feel a bit monotonous. You need to move around and try different angles.Pay attention to the cuts, too. Cameras aren’t designed to shoot for long periods. Its not the side that gets talked about too much, but retirement is much more than a question of money. Clearly, you need to ensure you do have a financial plan for the day you decide to take the retirement plunge. Assuming you have some idea of the financial situation in your life, lets look at the other, more personal side. The quick answer to the question is: Not if you dont have a plan for the personal side of your life. Many people mistakenly think that the day of not working will be a glorious day. Whats not to like about not working? Actually, plenty. Up to this point in your life, your work has been the one, if not the primary source, of meaning and purpose. If you unplug from something that vital in your life, you have virtually unplugged yourself from life support. Im not saying you have to keep working, but I am saying that you can only play so much golf and watch just so much daytime TV before you start feeling totally worthless about yourself. There is not one aspect of your life that is not impacted or affected by retirement. Its a huge social impact as it will impact your relationships with friends from work and probably your spouse or significant other, family and other non work friends. It impacts how you define yourself and how you find meaning. It means that you need to find something to spark your interest and imagination. You may expand doing some of the things you only got to do periodically when you worked. You will also find new things to do (hopefully). Your financial situation may be such that you need to continue to bring in some income for a while, so what might that work be? Even if the finances arent an issue, you may decide to work but in a different setting. Many people heading into retirement think about moving to be closer to family or in a geography that better suits them. Then theres the issue of your health and fitness. You might have ignored that while working, but your excuse will be going away. Y ou have to work at staying healthy as you age. Are you getting the drift yet? There are a lot of things to think about. There are things you need to spend time thinking and planning for. This isnt a 2 week vacation. This is probably 30 years (give or take a bit). 30 years of your life is well worth the effort. If youre sitting there doing a self assessment and youve come to the conclusion that all your ducks are in order both financially and in your personal life, then the answer is: dont wait. This will be the first time in your life that you have the freedom to really choose what kind of life you really want to have. So, dont delay, your life is waiting for you. LOI Student and Teacher Meet Face to Face Adriana and Hugo in a Miami restaurant.Hugo, a longtime LOI English student, and Adriana, one of our great teachers, recently had the chance to meet in person. Ironically, both Hugo and Adriana are Brazilian, but when they met they were both traveling in the United States. After taking many  classes with Adriana, Hugo mentioned hed be traveling in the U.S. and Adriana said shed be there around the same time. After Hugo had purchased his flights he  and Adriana realized their trip would cross in Miami Beach, so they decided to meet up. They walked along Lincoln Road and took in the tourist attractions and went to dinner with Adrianas family. They had plenty of opportunities to speak in English and Portuguese. So two Brazilians who live only about 300 miles from each other in Brazil met  face to face thousands of miles away from São Paulo.When Hugo  began learning English with LOI he was frustrated by the methods he had tried and wasnt really looking forward to the classes. Improving Academic Performance Note-taking, once the activity de rigueur of learning and memorizing facts and new information, and an activity that certainly appears, well, active, is fast becoming replaced with newer forms of active engagement. Taking notes has long been lauded as a tried and true approach to memory and retention, as well as the best option for having recorded documents with which to refer after an initial discussion, but note-taking in and of itself might not be the best strategy available and can often become its own mindless, passive, or even distracting activity. Instead, active listening with a more strategic approach to obtaining information allows the brain to stay focused on the lecture while still capturing highlights and overarching ideas. According to an article on Panopto, standard note-taking may be one of the worst options for understanding and retaining what occurred in classroom lecture; “not only do you miss the big picture, but you let your brain know it’s okay to forget the details too,” the article explains. Some, who take copious and ultra-organized notes, whether on the computer or by hand, often find that when they leave the classroom they cannot remember what was said. They cannot point out the big idea or essential question, let alone grasp the smaller components. While the hands were busy jotting down every word of the teacher, the brain was missing out on the big picture or overall theme of the lecturer, as well as the smaller facets thrown in that enrich the overall idea. Bloomberg Business agrees. In an article titled “Taking Notes Kills Your Memory,” the online journal emphatically states “the brain assumes that since the information was written down, there’s no need to remember it.” A great metaphor for this sort of memory-lapse is what happens when we write someone’s number down or plug it into our phones - there’s just no way we are remembering it in our brains, since it remains stored in a notebook or our handy devices! And just as we are learning as a society that one cannot really talk on the phone and drive at the same time in a healthy and sufficient manner, note-taking actually detracts from the brain’s ability to completely focus and engage with the lecture, thus leaving gaps in comprehension and clarity. But what about the necessity of having documents to refer to and use for studying outside of the classroom? Many schools and universities today are utilizing technology to create reference documents that provide video or audio footage that students can regularly refer back to after the live lecture. Having this handy helps learners of all varieties apply their best practices to getting the most out of the lecture in multiple modes. A student might take some written notes while sitting at home re-watching a lecture, or he might utilize rewinding and re-playing certain portions to gain further clarity on a challenging problem or complex issue. Students who retain information best through audio can listen to the document several times, even while driving or exercising, in order to focus and catch pieces they might have missed the first go-round. Even the most focused and attentive of us can lose our attention span over the course of an hour, and so to have the document for post-referral is extremely helpful and a fantastic use of technology. For those who do recognize in themselves that a certain degree of note-taking is beneficial, jotting down key insights or brief re-written summaries of lecture highlights is beneficial. This allows room for the mind to consider what the major takeaways are while still allowing one to fully engage and think deeply with professor, classmates, or coworkers. Language Challenge Dont Give Up! Language Challengers Youre ALMOST DONE! Language Challengers Youre ALMOST DONE! For those of you who are taking the challenge, youre halfway through the language challenge and we know its tough, but dont give up! Learning a language can be hard, and the number one thing preventing learners from finishing what they start is a drop in motivation. So to help you succeed, here are some tips for staying motivated. 1. Why? The one-worded question where all of this began. Why are you taking this challenge?  You wanted to learn a new language! 2. Stop focusing so much on the negatives. Bring out the positives and be proud of every achievement made, whether it be you finished another session, learned a new way of saying something or finally mastered some new vocabulary. 3. Understand that this isn’t meant to be easy. In fact it will be incredibly frustrating, but believe in yourself and you will go far. Doing 2-3 language lessons a week is tough but achievable. 4. You are not alone.  Talk with other challengers, post your achievements on our discussion pages to get encouragement from others.  Its always best when you share your achievements with others! 5. Focus on your goal Have fun. Look at what you’re doing and enjoy it.  The feeling of accomplishment (and the prize of 300ITC) that you will get when you complete the challenge is  something you should focus on.
